Youth Substance Use on Summer Break

It's true that there tends to be an increase in drug use among youth during the summer months. There are a few reasons for this trend:
1. More Free Time: During summer break, youth often have more free time on their hands without the structure of school. With this extra time, they may be more likely to experiment with drugs or alcohol.
2. Social Activities: Summer often brings about social gatherings, parties, and events where alcohol and drugs may be present. Peer pressure and the desire to fit in can lead some youth to try substances they might otherwise avoid.
3. Outdoor Festivals and Concerts: Summer is also the season for outdoor festivals and concerts, where drug and alcohol use can be prevalent. The atmosphere of these events, combined with the availability of substances, can contribute to increased experimentation.
4. Vacations and Travel: Some youth may be more likely to experiment with drugs or alcohol while on vacation, away from the supervision of parents or guardians.
5. Mental Health: For some youth, the summer months can exacerbate feelings of boredom, loneliness, or depression, which may lead them to seek solace in substance use.
It's essential for parents, educators, and communities to be aware of these factors and to take proactive measures to educate youth about the risks of drug and alcohol use, provide positive alternatives for summer activities, and offer support for mental health and well-being.
Even though school is out, we are still here for the community!
Early Intervention: Students identified as being "at risk" by educators, parents, or doctors are provided with an opportunity for a private, one-time session on the Kids Escaping Drugs Campus with their parent(s)/guardian, and a Face2Face Specialist. Parents are provided with educational materials, and referrals to treatment services are made as necessary.
