Beyond “Just Say No”: What We Know About Effective Drug Prevention Today

For decades, drug prevention messaging focused on one simple instruction: “Just Say No.” Launched in the 1980s, the “Just Say No” campaign aimed to combat drug use by encouraging young people to reject drugs outright.

While the campaign helped bring national attention to the issue, we now understand that preventing substance use is far more complex. The message “Just Say No” oversimplifies the reasons why people use drugs. It does not address the social, emotional, and environmental factors that can influence substance use or provide young people with the tools they need to navigate real-life challenges.

Today, we know that effective prevention goes deeper. It focuses on understanding young people’s needs, building protective factors and creating supportive environments where they can thrive.

Young people deserve accurate, age-appropriate information about drugs, their effects on the brain and body, and the risks associated with substance use. Understanding the facts empowers them to make informed decisions.
